Location

Where it is

Summerfield is an unincorporated community in south Marion County, near the intersection of US 301 and County Road 475A. It sits south of The Villages toward Ocala and is part of the Ocala metro area.

Because Summerfield isn't a city, Marion County handles zoning, roads and most services. The mailbox may say Summerfield even when a home sits inside a gated 55+ community or, in a few cases, inside a Marion County portion of The Villages that shares ZIP 34491 — so always check the parcel, the tax bill and any amenity or bond fees.

History

A short history

A post office called Summerfield has operated since 1885. The community is named for Col.

Adam G. Summer, a cattleman and landowner who settled a large plantation called Watula, or Long Hammock, in the 1850s and imported Brahman cattle after the Civil War.

The settlement was once called Whitesville after Charles H. White, who opened an early general store.

After the railroad routed through the area, the name changed to Summerfield in 1888 in honor of Colonel Summer.

Nearby

Living next to The Villages

Many buyers start by touring The Villages and then look at Summerfield for lower monthly fees or more lot choices. Summerfield addresses are often outside The Villages' bond and amenity-fee structure, but "often" isn't good enough — confirm the parcel before you write an offer.

Inside Summerfield you'll find family subdivisions, rural acreage, mobile-home communities and large gated 55+ neighbors like Stonecrest and Spruce Creek Golf & Country Club. Golf-cart access to shopping is common in those gated communities; it is not automatic for every Summerfield street.
