Location

Where it is, and which Spruce Creek this is

Spruce Creek Golf & Country Club is in Summerfield, in south Marion County between Gainesville and Orlando and about 15 miles south of Ocala. The Villages is just down the road, and the Summerfield ER is right outside the front gate.

There are a few Spruce Creeks nearby, so it's worth being precise. Spruce Creek South and Spruce Creek North are separate communities with their own fees.

This guide covers the Del Webb community on Del Webb Boulevard, the one with the fountain at the entrance.

How it's run

A big community that runs itself

Del Webb and Pulte built Spruce Creek from 1996 to 2007: 3,250 homes on 1,604 acres. Today it's a self-governing nonprofit.

Every owner is a member of the homeowners association, and the members elect a seven-member board that works a lot like a town council. A management company hired by the HOA runs day-to-day operations.

Del Webb deeded the Horizon Club, the fitness center and the common areas to the association, and the community says they're free and clear of liens and mortgages.

Lake Vista centers on a 14,000-square-foot fitness center with an indoor lap pool, along with a pavilion, horseshoe pits, a softball diamond, the Veterans Memorial and a walking trail through The American Kestrel Preserve. Golf

Golf at Eagle Ridge

Eagle Ridge has 36 holes designed by Terry Doss, set up as four 9-hole courses: the Champions, the Masters, the Heritage and the Memorial. You can play them in different combinations, warm up on the range and putting green, and finish at the Liberty Grille next to the pro shop.

Eagle Ridge isn't owned by the HOA, so golf isn't in your dues. There's no initiation or membership fee, though.

You pick a rate program at the pro shop that matches how often you play.

Social life

Clubs and everyday life

More than 60 clubs meet here, backed by a full-time activities director. The list runs from square dancing and synchronized swimming to woodcarving, model yachts, a car club and a motorcycle group.

Practical things are close. RV storage for campers and boats is inside the gates, a Marion County Fire Rescue station is within two miles of the front gate, and The Villages Hospital is a few minutes south.

Homes

The homes

Everything here is a resale. You'll find more than 40 floor plans, from about 800 to 2,800 square feet, most with two or three bedrooms and an attached garage.

Since the newest homes date to 2007, ask about the age of the roof, the AC and the water heater on any home you like.

Who it fits

Who Spruce Creek fits

It fits buyers who want a big activity calendar, golf without a club initiation, and HOA dues well under what the newer communities charge. It's a weaker fit if you want new construction (compare Stone Creek) or want to live closer to Ocala and I-75 (compare Ocala Palms).
