Location

Where it is

Belleview sits in southern Marion County where US 27, 301 and 441 meet in the center of town. All three highways lead about 10 miles northwest to Ocala.

Routes 27 and 441 continue southeast about 22 miles to Leesburg, and US 301 runs south about 13 miles to Wildwood.

The city itself covers about 4 square miles. Plenty of homes just outside the city limits still carry a Belleview address and ZIP 34420, so when you're shopping, check whether a home is in the city or unincorporated Marion County — that changes utilities, policing and some fees.

History

Small-town history

Belleview's name comes from the French belle and vue, "beautiful view." A post office opened in 1883, and the city incorporated on May 8, 1885. Early promoters marketed it as a New England Colony winter and health resort around Lake Lillian, with citrus and vegetable farming nearby.

The Lake Lillian Neighborhood Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It covers roughly 300 acres around the lake, with homes and civic buildings dating from the mid-1880s through about 1930, bounded by Lillian Circle, SE Stetson, SE Mimosa, SE Earp and the CSX tracks.

The lake

Lake Lillian and downtown

Lake Lillian is the city's gathering place. The city park on Robinson Road has a walking track, exercise stations, a playground, picnic tables and a pavilion.

Residents can reserve the pavilion at no charge; non-residents pay a $50 fee, and everyone leaves a $50 refundable deposit.

City events at the lake include Founder's Day, Trunk or Treat, Friday Foodie Fests and Light Up Lake Lillian. Everyday errands are easy along Abshier Boulevard (US 441), with grocery, medical and dining options a short drive from most neighborhoods.
